Cargill Grant Awarded for Study Abroad Program
Robert Jolly, Economics, and Shelley Taylor, Global Agriculture Programs, have been awarded a Cargill Higher Education Initiative grant for a 2007 student ag study abroad program in China. Using China as the authentic learning site, the "Made in China" program will employ experiential learning theory to combine the active learning model of study abroad with the economic themes. By the end of the program, students are expected not only to know the "what" of globalization in terms of economic development, but also to learn to appreciate, evaluate and develop their own ideas about the complex issues associated with the global economy and the roles played by the US and China. The 9-month course will take place in 3 phases: a semester-long course on the ISU campus; a travel course to China during the summer of 2007 where ISU students will team with Chinese economics students to work "in the field;" and post-travel presentations for ISU undergraduate courses.
