IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program 2007
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), located
just outside Vienna, Austria, each year sponsors a fellowship program
for graduate students who are studying in fields relevant to IIASA's
work on global change issues. About 50-60 graduate students from around
the world spend the summer working closely with IIASA senior researchers,
on projects relevant to each student's thesis topic. They end the summer
with an international network of colleagues interested in various aspects
of global change issues, and often have produced a paper that can be
published.
The application deadline for the 2007 YSSP Program is January 15, 2007. For more information: www.iiasa.ac.at/Admin/YSP/index.html
5th Global Conference of GCHERA

and Research in Agriculture, is holding its fifth global conference
in San Jose, Costa Rica on March 5-8, 2007. Earth University is the
host institution and one day of the meetings will be held there. For

FAS Seeks Hosts for WIS Borlaug
Fellows
USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) is seeking U.S. universities
willing to host six agricultural scientists from the African countries
of Mali, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, and Nigeria. These six Women in Science
(WIS) Borlaug Fellows have been selected based on their academic and
leadership skills and experiences. Their topics of research/study are
focused in the agricultural sciences. The expected time frame for the
five week program is Spring, 2007. Each Fellow has the following specific
research interests:
Fellow 1 - (Mali) - Food Scientist and Nutritionist: interested in
researching effect of traditional processing on the nutritive value
of sorghum/millet and its nutritional status.
Fellow 2 - (Uganda) - Agricultural Engineer: interested in analyzing
rainwater harvesting procedures and other water supplies for improving
agricultural production.
Fellow 3 - (Nigeria) - Food Scientist: interested in food technology
and new product development, food quality and food safety processes
for improving nutritional in-take.
Fellow 4 - (Nigeria) - Agricultural Extension officer: interested in
information and extension communication, training and gender studies.
Fellow 5 - (Kenya) - Food Scientist: interested in effect of honeybees
as pollinators on seed production of indigenous African vegetables for
household food security.
Fellow 6 - (Zambia) - Soil Scientist: interested in land use/land cover
classification, wants to study application of GIS and remote sensing
for soil evaluations.
If you would like to express your interest in hosting these Fellows, please send an estimated budget for the six Fellows and a brief (one-page or less) e-mail message to: KarenUetrecht@fas.usda.gov. The e-mail message should outline institutional capabilities, research expertise, previous experience with African agriculture and gender studies programs. FAS would like to receive all expressions of interest by Friday, November 24, 2006, so that universities can be selected by the end of December, 2006. Funding support will be provided by USAID and FAS as part of the Borlaug Fellows Program. For more information on this opportunity, please contact Karen Uetrecht, USDA/FAS (202-690-3359).
