Fall Seminar Series - Feeding the World: Are
We Making Progress?
"North Korea: Energy, Farm Policy and Famine"
presented by Randall Ireson, Former Development Assistance Coordinator,
American Friends Service Committee, will be the focus of the fourth
and final installment of the Fall 2007 Seminar Series on November
8, 12 - 1 p.m., in the Ensminger Room, 1204 Kildee Hall. The
series is sponsored by the M.E. Ensminger International Chair in Animal
Agriculture, Raymond and Mary Baker Chair in Global Agriculture and

ISU Council on International Programs Grants
Program for 2007-08
Iowa State University is engaged globally in learning, discovery and
engagement. To support this important institutional priority the ISU
Council on International Programs is issuing a Call for Proposals of
up to $5000 for internationalization/globalization grants to be spent
by June 30, 2008. The purpose of this solicitation is to fund individual
and group projects led by faculty and staff to enhance the infusion
of international perspectives into the learning, discovery, and/or engagement
activities of the university. Deadline: November

USDA-FAS Paid Internships
International Agricultural Internship
Program (IAIP)
The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, one of the 4 U.S. government
foreign service agencies, places approximately 10 students each semester
(spring, summer and fall) with excellent analysis, marketing, writing,
language and organizational skills and experience to work on international
agricultural trade policy issues, commodity and market analysis and
organizing trade events in their overseas offices for a 10-16 week PAID
INTERNSHIP. U.S. citizen students who are majoring in a business or
science related agricultural field, i.e. Ag Econ, Econ, Finance, Business
or Marketing, International Studies or Relations, Law or in a Biotechnology
Program are eligible. Online registration for the summer 2008 semester
closes on November 15, 2007 and the fall
2008 application deadline is April 3, 2008.

Career Internship Program (CIP)
The USDA-FAS Career Intern Program (CIP) is designed to prepare
exceptional men and women who have professional experiences in agriculture
and/or business, a college degree, and competencies for careers in public
service with FAS. Interns will participate in a 2-year program that
is designed to fine-tune their skills and abilities. During the 2-year
internship, interns work as full-time employees with substantial training
and rotation opportunities. Upon successful completion, interns are
offered permanent career positions. Please check the FAS CIP site on

VEF Visiting Scholar Program
The Vietnam Education Foundation is pleased to announce the VEF Visiting
Scholar Program (VSP) 2008 for Vietnamese nationals who already hold
a doctorate in a field of science, technology, engineering, or math.
For this year, VEF will fund 10 visiting scholars for periods of time
ranging from 5 months to 1 year (12 months). Online applications will

International Science and Education Competitive
Grants Program
An RFA for the International Science and Education (ISE)
competitive grants program has been issued. The ISE supports research,
extension, and teaching activities that will enhance the capabilities
of American colleges and universities to conduct international collaborative
research, extension and teaching. ISE projects are expected to enhance
the international content of curricula; ensure that faculty work beyond
the U.S. and bring lessons learned back home; promote international
research partnerships; enhance the use and application of foreign technologies
in the U.S.; and strengthen the role that colleges and universities
play in maintaining U.S. competitiveness.

Ag Study Abroad BBQ
More than 150 CALS students attended the annual Agriculture Study Abroad
BBQ hosted by the Agriculture Study Abroad office at Kildee Pavilion
on October. 15. In addition to free food, students also talked to group
leaders of some of the spring and summer travel courses to learn more
about international opportunities provided through the college.
Spring Travel Courses
7 spring travel courses are being sponsored by the Agriculture Study
Abroad office.
***Only Costa Rica (Field Research Experience in a Costa Rican Rainforest) is still open to applications.
President of Blue Sky Landscape Group Visits
ISU
The president of Hangzhou Blue Sky Landscape Group,
China, Mr. Chen Xiangqiang, visited ISU October 22-24. Blue Sky Landscape
Group has been working closely with the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences for the past 3 years, especially in the area of student programs.
They have been providing unique experiences for ISU students who participate
in short-term travel courses to China. The college recently began a
pilot internship program with the Blue Sky Landscape Group this year.

The winners for the 6th Agriculture Study Abroad Photo
Contest have been selected. They are Megan Filbert for the “Culture”
category, Nicholas Schmidt for the “Artistic and Technical Quality”
category, and Shane Edelen for the “ISU Around the World”
