  • King of Busoga_Iowa State University CALS

    As proof of the synergetic connection between Iowa State University and The Busoga Kingdom of Uganda, a memorandum of cooperation and understanding was signed on Aug. 17 to formalize cooperation and collaboration to benefit both institutions.

    His Majesty William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, King of Busoga, Uganda, and several members of his administration, were in Iowa Aug. 11-18 to learn about the state’s agriculture. In addition to signing the MOU, their visit, which was supported by the Kolschowsky Foundation, included tours of Iowa State departments and farms, a seminar with College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty, staff and students, time at the Iowa State Fair and meetings with various Iowa leaders.

  • The Private Sector Partnerships to Strengthen Higher Education activity, funded by USAID and implemented by the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the Kosova Education Center, is dedicated to equipping public university staff in Kosovo with the necessary tools, systems, and expertise to effectively prepare Agriculture and ICT students for the job market.

  • The Global Programs Office historical report provides a snapshot of global programs in the Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in response to key initiatives for improving livelihoods in developing and transitioning countries around the world from 1987-2020 and is divided within the major time frames of 1987-2000 and 2001-2020. It is organized thematically within those timeframes to capture how the College responded to global needs and partnerships within a geopolitical framework. The report also showcases Global Program’s ongoing priorities, successful public/private partnerships, and a robust study abroad program within the College. The first report on the history of international programs prepared by Dr. J.T. Scott, the first Director of International Programs in the College of Agriculture and Dr. R.A.

  • Dr Lenka at Niagara Falls

    Dr. Sangeeta Lenka, a Principal Scientist with the Indian Institute of Soil Science under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in Bhopal, India, was selected to participate in a three-month Scientific Exchange program at Iowa State University sponsored by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. With over 15 years of extensive work and research on climate change, Dr. Lenka aims to establish a joint Climate Smart Agricultural Systems program between ISU and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The research objectives focus on evaluating the effect of climate change and management on soil greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, soil organic carbon storage, and soybean and corn yields. Dr. Rameshwar Kanwar, a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, is hosting Dr. Lenka. 

  • Important Updates from the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) Export control process for Cystart requests is changing.
  • During the week of June 12th, 2023, the Private Sector Partnerships to Strengthen Higher Education Activity successfully organized a series of highly informative training workshops titled "Structured Internships in Agriculture." These workshops provided valuable insights into internship management procedures, featuring presentations by the esteemed Animal Science Department at Iowa State University (ISU). The event was held at the universities of Prishtina, Prizren, and Peja and was skillfully led by Christen Burgett, M.Sc., Associate Teaching Professor and Internship Programs Director for the Animal Science Department at ISU.   • Crislene Vieira Dos Santos with Dr Asheesh Singh lab

    Crislene Vieira Dos Santos, a Ph.D. student at the Federal University of Vicosa in Brazil, is partaking in a visiting scholar program under the guidance of Dr. Asheesh Singh, a professor in the Department of Agronomy. Growing up just a few miles from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) in Brasília, Brazil, Cris has been interested in agronomy and plant breeding since a young age. When she turned 17 years old, she started working at the research company, which allowed her to meet experts in the industry that became mentors for her motivation and current career path. 

  • Iowa State University’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) and its Uganda Program (ISU-UP) use the power of education to develop responsible global citizens and thriving local communities that benefit from food and financial security, healthcare, civic participation, social inclusion, and environmental stewardship. One key set of ingredients in achieving our mission is skills development for self-reliance. Currently, we cannot accommodate the number of mothers and youth who wish to develop their skills.  With your help, we can assist more individuals in obtaining the knowledge and boost they need to support themselves. Join our effort to provide projects like these that guide Ugandans to long-term sustainable livelihoods:

  • The U.S. Department of State announced that The Administration will end the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for international air travelers at the end of the day on May 11, the same day that the COVID-19 public health emergency ends. This means starting May 12, noncitizen nonimmigrant air passengers will no longer need to show proof of being fully vaccinated with an accepted COVID-19 vaccine to board a flight to the United States. CDC’s Amended Order Implementing Presidential Proclamation on Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the COVID-19 Pandemic will no longer be in effect when the Presidential Proclamation Advancing the Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the COVID-19 Pandemic is revoked.

    The University of Iowa, in partnership with Iowa State and the Kosova Education Center, announced a five-year, $4 million cooperative agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on April 24 in a signing ceremony at the National Library of Kosovo in Pristina. The aim is to improve how three public universities in Kosovo interact with agricultural and information and communication technology companies, leading to more industry-driven research and graduates who are better prepared for the workforce.     AMES, Iowa – More than a dozen Iowa State University faculty and staff will be working with colleagues at universities in Kosovo over the next five years to boost the nation’s agricultural economy.

  • Welcome, Rob White!

    In April, Rob White joined the CALS team and will serve Global Programs and CSRL as a Budget and Finance Specialist.

    White earned his Ph.D. from the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. Prior to that, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Russian, a Bachelor of Accountancy, and a Master of Accountancy degrees from the University of Oklahoma.

    For ten years, Dr. White was a faculty within Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business. While there, his research interests focused on corporate governance across a variety of settings, including entrepreneurial, international, and troubled firms. His work appeared in the Journal of Management, the Journal of Management Studies, The Oxford Handbook of Corporate Governance, and other research and media outlets.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), Fellowship Programs, announces this funding opportunity to support the Scientific Cooperation and Research Program (SCRP) by issuing new awards. This opportunity is available to State cooperative institutions or other colleges and universities in the United States, as defined at 7 USC 3103. In addition, applicants must be former Mentors and Fellows from USDA/FAS’s Borlaug International Agricultural Technology Fellowship Program with an ongoing collaboration. This program is intended to support applied research, extension, and education collaborations between U.S. researchers and their foreign counterparts from selected emerging market economies.

  • The French Embassy in the U.S., and FACE Foundation are pleased to announce the launch of the 2023 Transatlantic Mobility Program (TMP) grant call for applications. The program supports France- and U.S.-based higher education institutions in developing study abroad opportunities by distributing grants of up to $20,000 per institution. 

    Higher education institutions play an essential role in building strong partnerships, developing innovative and sustainable study abroad models and designing programs for non-traditional students.  

    Colleges and universities in France and the United States are invited to submit project proposals that seek to expand and diversify student mobility on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • Mariia and Temple Grandin

    Mariia Shcherbakova, a second-year undergraduate student studying livestock and bioresources at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences in Kyiv, Ukraine is the 2022 inaugural recipient of the Stefan and Kateryna Dwojak ISU-Ukraine Exchange Program scholarship. Stefan "Steve" and Kateryna Dwojak developed the gift to support and facilitate a robust exchange program between Ukraine and Iowa State University.

    Mariia is participating in a 5-month student internship at Iowa State University in the Department of Animal Science under the guidance of Dr. Gail Carpenter, assistant professor of extension and outreach, and Dr. Nikki Ferwerda, Associate Teaching Professor and Equine Farm Manager.

  • Dr. Kebatenne Hulela, associate professor at the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources is no stranger to Iowa State University. Dr. Hulela received her Ph.D. in Agricultural Education and Studies from Iowa State University in 2007 and continues to take pride in the education and experiences she gained from the university.

    “As an educator myself, the Ph.D. program taught me how to create teaching content and curriculum for the courses I teach, prepared me to work with different departments in curriculum development, and exposed me to academic research and professional writing at the collegiate level. I take my experience from Iowa State with me as I give lectures to students, create assignments and activities, and also provide mentorship to other faculty, staff, and students.”

  • The Global Programs office in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences supports departments in their global engagement initiatives across the globe. Our office provides support and assistance to faculty and staff interested in building relationships and collaborative efforts worldwide. We also provide global opportunities for students through CALS Study Abroad programs.
